Egg Protection Device Competition
Objectives
Design and build the highest-impact-load-resistant plain or reinforced concrete Egg Protection Device (EPD). Learn about concrete’s sustainable benefits related to durability, impact resistance, and other real-life aspects which an EPD simulates.
This year the EPD competition will be used to evaluate a potential structure for long-term protection of a high-value military asset. The structure must be designed to protect the asset (egg) from repeated aerial bombardment as well as potential chemical attack. In designing the EPD, consideration should be made for structural resistance of repeated and increasing loading, as well as durability of the concrete mixture. Reinforcing placement and design plays a large role in the survivability of the structure as well as overall density and durability of the concrete mixture itself. Physical strength will be tested by dropping a weight onto the structure while durability will be measured by performing resistivity on samples of the concrete mixture. The teams that most successfully create a durable structure will be rewarded.

FRC Bowling Ball Competition
Objectives
The objective of this competition is to demonstrate the effect of fibers in reinforcing concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a concrete fiber-reinforced element, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis.
Teams will be challenged to design and construct a fiber-reinforced concrete bowling ball that achieves optimal performance for specified tests and tasks. Also to document and present the team’s work to an audience of industry professionals.

Pervious Concrete Cylinder Competition
Objective
Teams are challenged to apply sustainability concepts and to use their knowledge of concrete mixture design by producing pervious concrete that balances permeability and splitting tensile strength. Teams are additionally challenged to develop a mixture design that demonstrates cementitious efficiency; that is, maintaining the overall performance of the mixture with the lowest amount of cementitious material. A report that documents the team’s cylinder production process and ability to generate an accurate mixture design is also scored. Only teams judged to have a complete and accurate mixture design are eligible for inclusion in the Cementitious Efficiency prize category.
